I used to collect productivity books like they were the solution to all my problems.
I’d buy them hoping the next one would finally fix my time management struggles. I was drowning in overwhelm, trying to balance my full-time job with my creative ambitions, and feeling constantly behind.
But here’s the truth: Buying the books didn’t change anything. Applying them did.
Out of the dozens I’ve read, five specific books actually helped me stop burning out and start showing up consistently. These aren't just trendy titles; they are the frameworks that changed how I plan, focus, and view my identity as a creator.
If you are a woman balancing a full-time career with a side project, and you’re tired of feeling disorganized and exhausted, this list is for you.
👇 Watch the full breakdown of how I apply these principles in my latest video:
The 5 Frameworks That Changed My Work-Life Balance
In the video, I go deep into the "how-to," but here is the high-level breakdown of the lessons that shifted my mindset from "busy employee" to "thriving creator."
1. Identity Over Goals (Atomic Habits by James Clear)
We often set goals like "I want to create content." But James Clear teaches us that identity shapes behavior.
* The Shift: Instead of focusing on the outcome, focus on the identity. Tell yourself, "I am a creator."
* The Lesson: You don’t need more motivation; you need a system. Small actions, even just 2 hours a week, compound into massive results for your side business.
2. The Disciplined Pursuit of Less (Essentialism by Greg McKeown)
When you have a 9-5, you cannot say "yes" to everything.
* The Shift: Stop trying to please everyone. Clarity comes from eliminating the non-essentials.
* The Lesson: Saying "no" is a success strategy, not a weakness. You have to trade off the "good" to make space for the "great" in your side project.
3. Context Switching is the Enemy (Deep Work by Cal Newport)
Do you feel like you're working all the time but getting nothing done? That’s usually due to shallow work and distractions.
* The Shift: You don’t need more time; you need more focus.
* The Lesson: Block out distraction-free time. Even 90 minutes of deep work can create more momentum for your side project than 8 hours of distracted multitasking.
4. The Cure for Burnout (The One Thing by Gary Keller)
This is the book that stopped me from quitting. I was struggling with a long to-do list and decision paralysis.
* The Shift: What is the one thing you can do such that by doing it, everything else becomes easier or unnecessary?
* The Lesson: I stopped trying to learn everything from every book or do everything in my business at once. I focus on one high-impact task. When in doubt, return to your "One Thing."
5. Make Time for What Matters (Make Time by Knapp & Zeratsky)
This is the playful, practical side of productivity.
* The Shift: Stop reacting to your day and start designing it.
* The Lesson: Use the "Daily Highlight" strategy. If you have a full-time job, you might only have energy for ONE big thing for your business today. Highlight it, do it, and count the day as a win.
